What is Autism

Autism is considered as a dis that severely impairs development of a person 's ability to communicate , interact with other people , and

br maintain normal contact with the outside world (Woods , 2006 . It was in 1943 that Dr . Leo Kanner of the Johns Hopkins Hospital made a study of 11 children and labeled this as early infantile autism ' and that was the first time the term was heard (National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH] , 2007 . Subsequently , Dr . Hans Asperger , a German scientist have found a relatively milder case and termed this as Asperger Syndrome (NIMH , 2007 . Today , these two are categorized to be among the top five pervasive development diss ' or more commonly referred to today as the autism spectrum diss

Autism is sometimes termed as classical autism ' and is the most common among the previously mentioned autism spectrum diss (National Institute of Neurological Diss and Stroke [NINDS] , 2006 This can be detected accurately before the age of three and some even claim that some children can be seen with symptoms of such kind before the age of one (NIMH , 2007

How Pervasive is Autism

According to Woods (2006 , autism affects children before the age of three at the rate of 1 in every 500 to 1 in every 166 . Moreover , the same author noted that it is four times more common in males than in females (Woods , 2006 . A different statistic is posed by the NINDS (2006 ) where it is stated in the fact sheet that they released that experts believe that in every 1000 children , three to six children have autism . With regard to the likelihood of autism affecting males four times more than females , they agree with Woods (NINDS , 2006 . Another probability is given by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP ) stating that in 1980s , the estimate is at 4 out of 10 ,000 children and in 2002 , the numbers have already been double (Dingfelder The said organization did not mention anything in relation to gender and the likelihood of having autism . A further study done on Asia , Europe and United Kingdom pegged the prevalence rate to be two to six for every 1 ,000 children (NIMH , 2007

Though the statistics may be different , the fact that the prevalence is rather high should be a concern for both parents and the heath sectors and emphasis on screening should be realized (NIMH , 2007
