Abstract

Attachment theory has become a prominent theory for explaining and predicting parents child bonding patterns . This theory was first developed by a known British psychoanalyst Bowlby the year 1990 when he was trying to know the degree of distress experienced by infants who had been separated from their parents . In his findings he realized that infants who are separated would spend long hours crying , clinging either to prevent separation from their parents or to reestablish access to

the missing parents . The key issue in the attachment theory is that mothers who are always with their children and provides to their needs normally establish a sense of security (Mercer , 2006 . From the normal definition the term attachment simply means an emotional bond that links two people . According to Bowlby (1969 , earliest bonds formed by children with their caregivers or parents have a strong effect that can be seen through their stages of development . The issue of attachment also is proved to keep infants close to their mothers therefore improving the chances of survival up to later stages of development

There are two characteristics of attachment . One is that children who are given security during infancy period develop less distress and depression when separated from their caregivers . Even if the caregivers leave them during later stages of development , they will feel assured that the caregivers will return (Bowlby , 1969 . The other characteristic of attachment is that children who are secured will tend to seek comfort from their parents and caregivers when frightened . Such children normally develop a notion that their caregivers or parents will provide for their needs anytime they may need help
