Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the airways . People with asthma have episodes in which breathing becomes difficult . Disruption of a gene called Nrf2 , plays role in determining the susceptibility to asthma

During an asthma attack , the lining of the airways becomes swollen Muscles surrounding the airways tighten . As a result , the inside of the airways becomes narrower . The airways also become blocked with mucus Air can no longer move freely in and out of the lungs . In the UK

there are around 5 million people with asthma . Asthma is the commonest chronic condition affecting children , with 1 in 7 of all children having asthma at any one time . The patient of asthma with mild to moderate asthma should be reviewed regularly every 6 months

From the National Child development Study involving a cohort of 8806 British children studied at 7 ,11 ,and 16years , Anderson found that the subsequent onset of asthma was predicted by male sex , mothers age at birth , pneumonia , whooping cough , tonsillectomy /adenoidectomy , allergic rhinitis , eczema , and abdominal pain /vomiting attacks . Factors that were not predictive included infant feeding patterns . Maternal smoking in pregnancy increased the relative risk of asthma or wheezing in early life , but the parents ' and child 's smoking habits when the child was aged 16 were not related to asthma
