Higher education in America has had profound reforms in terms of changes in structures of institutions of higher learning , mode of learning and the constituents of the learning systems over the years . Many great scholars have contributed a lot towards making the different institutions more efficient and able to supply the demand for educated workforce for or nation

The government has over the years participated in ensuring that the best and most efficient systems of higher learning are put in place . The commitment of the government has been consistent as was evident

in among other things the creation of the Land Grants colleges established through the Land Grants Act and the G .I . Bill after the World War II The bill was to allow the government pay for college for war veterans The bill lead to a massive enrollment of the veterans and their children or the baby boomers in the present America who are now retiring and leaving a new breed of younger generation in the workforce . Americans have witnessed the development of community colleges and expansion of state colleges and learning opportunities have been created for women especially since the Harvard Annex days

I was born in 1834 at Beacon Street , Boston . My dad , Samuel A . Eliot was a stately gentleman who completed Harvard with distinction . He graduated from the Divinity School in 1820 . While a Treasurer in the college , he published a short history of the institution entitled , `A sketch of the History of Harvard College and of its Present Condition . He often wrote for North American Review and the Christian Examiner . I believe his works had a lot of influence in my career and views in the latter years

I entered Harvard in 1849 at the age of fifteen where I was to be a student , a tutor and assistant professor for nine years . It is important to note that I entered the college at a period when there were various giants in debate and some who included Webster and Clay . There also was a lot of literally achievement in the 1850s ' Harvard which was a country college with three to four hundred students . The catalogue for the year I entered college had rigid rules and regulations which were imposed on students . There was no choice of studies for freshmen and sophomores There were no laboratories the foundation of all the courses was formed by prescribed textbooks and references to the library being very limited . When I joined college there was lack of originality and inspiration . My admission to the private laboratory of Professor Josiah Parsons Cooke was a great opportunity to do Chemistry experiments at the basement of the University Hall . I was able to add to the study of chemistry , mineralogy and I accompanied Professor Cook to various mines and smelting factories .
