The difference between mean and the median could have been caused by outliers . An outlier is a statistic which lies as an abnormal detachment from other values in an unsystematic sample from a population (Bryc 2005 . It is therefore the decision of an analyst to make a judgment on what will be regarded as abnormal (Bryc , 2005 . This data is not distributed normally . One of the characteristics of a normal distribution is that

the curve is symmetrical meaning that the mean mode , and the median should be equal

When describing the cost claim outlay , median is preferred to the expense of the mean . This is because mean is usually affected by outliers but the median remains the same . The median is only affected by the data approaching the middle of the distribution (Bryc , 2005 . Median is also obtained by considering all the values even when huge volume of data is being considered . There is no other option of determining the data that is at the center rather than the median . Therefore the best method of describing the data is the use of a normal distribution
