Postmodernism refers to an artistic approach which surfaced in the late twentieth century to counter the ideologies and persuasion of its predecessor 'modernism ' Postmodern art departs from the conventions of structure and organization central to modernism , and instead welcomes and incorporates chaos , clutter , and dis as key elements of its formation

Although the term is also widely used in areas such as culture and philosophy , postmodernism in the

arts runs evident in the works of artists along the lines of Marcel Duchamp , Andy Warhol , and Barbara Kruger , among many others

Duchamp , Warhol and Kruger 's artworks share the characteristics of a collage effect , mixed media type of art in what appears to be a number of appropriated materials meshed together to form a medley of colors chaos , deviance and irony beautifully combined

Postmodernism covers a great extent of other art movements which rose under its influence among them , dadaism , abstract expressionism , pop art , and so on

2 . Explain the following art movements . Include at least one artist and an an artwork as an example of each movement

Abstract Expressionism

Perhaps the most well known artist in abstract expressionism , Jackson Pollock 's incensed drip paintings revolutionized the way artists approach painting . Pollock would place a large canvass on the floor and proceed to pour and splatter paint against it vigorously the end result is one of his many paintings which embody the idea of abstract expressionism , and one that captures the rhythm and spirit of his to approach

Action Painting

Synonymous to abstract expressionism , and other times referred to as 'gestural abstraction ' action painting shares the same principles as the previously stated art movement . It incorporates a technique and philosophy which arbitrarily captures the spirit , mood and tone of the artist through a spontaneous rendering of strokes . Apart from Pollock action painters include Willem de Kooning , Franz Kline and Joan Mitchell

Neo-Dada

Dadaism refers to an artistic protest movement which emerged in 1916 among a group of artists in Switzerland who were tired of traditional artforms . Neo-dada is characterized by the same spirit of protest , often incorporating 'shock-art ' with 'degenerate ' themes , and going against the traditional notion of beauty and the aesthetically appealing . This much is exemplified in Marcel Duchamp 's controversial art piece 'Fountain

Pop Art

Andy Warhol is the artist who automatically comes to mind whenever the term pop art is implied . His paintings of Campbell soup cans , Marilyn Monroe , as well as other prevalent images in pop culture , repeated over in various copies and different colors in a single painting , is what pop art , essentially looks like . The movement emerged from England in the 1950s but quickly caught fire in the United States in the succceeding years . It characterizes the integration of the banal and commercial into playful artforms , most of which are derived from 'popular mass culture
