Introduction

An electoral system can be defined as a detailed constitutional framework and a voting system which translates the vote into a political decision . It has been described as a means used in the calculation of the number of the elected positions in an administration that individuals and parties get awarded following an election . Electoral systems therefore provides for a means in which votes are translated into parliamentary seats or other domains of government . In essence , an electoral system

would determine the number of votes and the type of votes required in awarding seats to candidates and parties in an election (Commonwealth of Australia , 2006

There are various types of electoral systems used in the world and the various electoral systems are responsible for the production of the different results and also provide the voters with different kinds of choices . There are various types of electoral systems used around the world and in some instances within the individual countries whereby they are found being used in different regions and at the various levels of government . This paper shall however focus on two types of electoral systems which include the plurality electoral system and the majority electoral system elaborating on the advantages and disadvantages that area associated with each one of them
