Rhetorical Analysis of an Editorial Article The editorial written by the New York Times editors in March 24 , 2010 is critical of the manner that the Roman Catholic Church 's leadership handles the controversial issue or pedophilia within the ranks of the clergy . By its title alone , The Pope and the Pedophilia Scandal , the piece indicates immediately the responsibility of the Church 's highest leader the cases of sexual molestation . It was written mostly in an active voice , which made it more effective in putting weight in its criticism . Although the choice

of words are not really sharp , the rhetorical make-up of the first paragraph is already a strong indictment of what it perceived as the lenient attitude of the Pope towards erring and pedophile priests . It never goes to the extent of comparing other churches or religious faiths to Catholicism though . In fact , while it is critical of the Pope and the entire Church leadership 's leniency , it manages to recognize the sincere apologetic gesture from them Nevertheless , it reiterates the point mentioned in the first paragraph at the end quoting the German chancellor 's request from the Church . It is clear that ethos was the strategy for rhetorical appeal applied by the New York Times editors . However , the authors of the editorial did not write it in a manner where their own moral standards are highlighted .
