The inspiration for Picasso 's mural came from world events , specifically the Nazi bombing and virtual eradication of Guernica , an old Basque township in northern Spain . The assault of this nonmilitary target took less than 4 hours , during which airplanes plunging low from above the

center of town , machine-gunned the townspeople who had taken refuge in the fields .News bulletins and shocking photographs of the massacre quickly reached the rest of the world and presented the inspiration for possibly the most popular painting of the 20th century . The painting , which was started six days subsequent to the bombing and was finished five weeks later , captured the anguish resulting from meaningless brutality
The image , despite its size , is not oppressive rather it seems to envelop the spectator making him feel part of the horrific scene . The landscape composition uses figure groups . On the far left is a screaming mother with a dead child in her arms and a bull standing over her looking out at the scene . A panicked bird stands on a shelf behind the bull .
