In to know more about Modern Art , we must first consider the art that existed before it . Most of us are familiar with artists like Leonardo Da Vinci and Michaelangelo . We also know about Cathedral paintings , sculptures , and other artistic works that were created several hundred years ago . These artworks were all created using the artist 's own hands , with the help of their brush and pigments , or perhaps their hammer and chisel . If we compare the abundance and the availability of materials then and now , the artists of the present clearly have the advantage .
