Differences Between Italian and Northern Renaissance in Sculpture Painting and Architecture

The Renaissance is a cultural movement that flourished in Europe in the late Middle Ages roughly between XIV and XVII centuries . The word originates from the French word meaning rebirth , meaning rebirth of ancient culture after a millennium of Dark Ages . The key feature of Renaissance was interest to earthly life and human as a center of the universe , which contrasted to medieval interest to God and contempt towards all carnal things . Basically Renaissance ideas came from Italy and spread

over Europe about 1450-1500 AD . Although Renaissance was a single movement , it naturally had regional differences preconditioned by cultural diversity of medieval Europe , differences in the way of life and mentality in various parts of Europe . Therefore , it is often spoke of Italian Renaissance , Spanish Renaissance ' or French Renaissance , meaning concrete features of Renaissance in those countries . This aims to investigate specific developments of Renaissance in Italy and in Northern Europe (Germany , Flanders Burgundy , Netherlands ) in terms of sculpture , painting and architecture .Italian Renaissance in painting started with the works of Giotto (1267-1337 ) from Florence , who firstly started to experiment with three-dimensional space and stepped away from iconographic schemes of painting , giving more individuality to the depicted personalities . The trends , created by Giotto have been developed by Paolo Uccello and Piero della Francesca Works by those masters were a real revolution in the world of flat gothic paintings as they painted vivid plastic figures which depicted human body with scientific accuracy . These discoveries of Early Renaissance created backgrounds for further development in the Hugh renaissance period . At the same period a Florentian sculptor Donato di Niccolt di Betto Bardi more known as Donatello (1386-1466 ) formed the Renaissance idea of sculpture creating statues and bas-reliefs similar to ancient analogues . The starting point of Italian Renaissance in architecture is the construction of Florence Cathedral between 1420 and 1436 . This building bears features making it radically different from earlier Gothic temples such as a round dome , a great number of frescoes and the absence of gothic spires . Renaissance ideas in art were in zenith in the period of High Renaissance between 1500 and 1550 . This was a period when such prominent masters as Leonardo da Vinci , Rapahel Michelangelo and Titian lived and worked . The period is characterized with accurate representation of human body in painting , as well as variety of themes for the artworks . Art was no longer ecclesiastic and became completely secular even in depiction of Evangelic scenes Painters experimented with both shape and color , creating complicated paintings . The sculptures of Michelangelo Buonarroti were a hymn to naked human body , unprecedented since the times of antiquity . In architecture this was a transitional period between renaissance and baroque styles , with the most famous artwork being St . Peter 's Basilica in Rome . By late XVI century Renaissance evolved into its late forms such as Mannerism .
