Introduction

Art has gone through several periods or eras in the past , every period has been recorded by historians . Victorian era , middle ages and realism are a few of the eras art history has gone through . Every period has had immense importance in the development and modification of art . Art in ancient times was not limited to paintings or architecture every thing from pottery to sculptures came under the category of art . Art of that

time is even used by researchers and scholars to understand the living standard , eating habits of our ancestors an example of this can be the cave art which represents how people of that time used to hunt animals Hence it can be evaluated that Greek periods has had immense importance in the history of art and it has contributed immensely towards the evolution of new style , modification and development of the existing art (Breuil , pg . 2

History of Greek Art

History of Greek art is history of art at work , of the way in which group of closely linked small- scale societies communicated in images of the way in which such visual communications related to oral and written communications , and of the connections between and social and political life (Osborne , pg . 9 ) The Greek art history is not about paintings on merely hundreds of pots but it is about the ten thousands of painted pots . Then there is the style of draughtsman , choice and use of colors and techniques of color which are not based on individual level . Hence it can be observed that Greek art was not about individuals it was about the relations in society , about the culture , their traditions and values . Greek art also tells us that how art can be used as a medium which can represent the social and political situation of a country . An example of this can be the sculptures in temples and cemeteries force and observer to appreciate the cultural setting instead of just appreciating the artists work

Greek periods cover around 1600 years and are partially responsible for the evolution of western art . The Greek age is subdivided into three distinguished periods known as the Archaic which is rather stiff and primitive , while the Classical becomes more sophisticated and realistic and the Hellenistic becomes highly decorative and flowery . Thus , we can imagine these periods through which art evolved in a primitive form but with time and effort modified to become eye pleasing and plush . Not only did Greek art has three periods Greek architecture even comprise of three periods which include the Doric columns were the most simple construction done based on the basic principles of architecture while Ionic were highly decorative were the simple structures were taken a step further .
