museum has a great collection of well-known and distinguished treasures , from paintings , sculptures to artifacts . In the museum , a permanent display can be seen called the Ten Treasures ' which gives emphasis on the interests of the museum . Expensive treasures and collections can also be seen at the Dallas Museum of Art . Among these expensive treasures is the 20 million Hamon Building collection . More expensive that the Hamon Building collection is the Wendy and Emery Reves Collection , that is worth 38 million . There are also 400 pieces of Egyptian and Nubian art in the museum 's collection

A work of art , artwork or fine art , refers to the development or creation of a song , film , book , sculpture , print or a painting with great aesthetic values . Usually , it depicts or employs symbolic statements of meanings hidden within . It can also be called objet d 'art ' which literally means art object . In this definition or criteria of choosing a work of art , the aesthetic value is the one which is given importance as compared to the object 's practical functions . To determine whether a painting , sculpture or architecture is a work of art , the concepts of literary merit and artistic merit are usually used or employed
Artistic merit refers to the judgment of a piece of work , painting sculpture or architecture giving emphasis , more points or consideration to its perceived quality or value . Usually , artistic merit is given or used to evaluate a visual art . The quality of an artwork also depends greatly on the artistic merit that is given to it . On the other hand literary merit generally refers to the quality or characteristics of written works . This is usually applied to literary fictions of different genres and just like the artistic merit , the aesthetic value of a literary novel or written work is a major determinant regarding its quality . It was believed that the literary merit is harder to define as compared to the artistic merit . As such , the ideas within artworks could vary from one point of view to the other
