Summer by Carl Frieseke and Mrs . Chase in Prospect Park by William Merritt are two different works of art that are extremely similar in many ways . Aside from both being oil paintings , the paintings also share having an outdoor ' theme and they both stay within their own family of colors . But also , they are , in some ways , different . Frieseke , an American Impressionist , was born in Owosso , Michigan on April 7 , 1874 . At a young age , he began his professional life as a cartoonist . When he decided to become a painter , Frieseke first studied at the Art Institute of Chicago , then at the Art Students League of New York

While living in Paris , Frieseke painted landscapes , parks and boulevards and dabbled in painting people nude . These paintings of the nude were successes , and one was even purchased in 1904 by the French Government .
