Running Head : Pop Art Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism Pop art was a movement that was popular in the nineteen fifties and sixties . Even though there were many pop artist , Andy Warhol stands out as the most popular and his work is the most recognizable . It concentrated on objects and people that were familiar in the popular culture of the time Pop artist used comic book characters , items in grocery stores billboards , entertainers , and etc as the focal point of their art . Roy Lichtenstein 's

Mustard on White simply focuses on a piece of white bread on a saucer with mustard being spread with a common butter knife During the nineteen sixties , white bread was the most popular type of bread and of course mustard was a popular condiment . Everyone in the country who saw the work would automatically be transported to a familiar scene of their everyday life . Of course who could forget Andy Warhol 's Marilyn Monroe , Mick Jagger , or Campbell 's Tomato Soup Can The Campbell 's Soup Can was realistic , but Monroe and Jagger 's familiar image was splotched with colors that were bright and vibrant
Instead of feeding into the popular culture , the artist whose works were considered abstract expressionism , reacted to the pop art by concentrating on emotion rather than the familiar . The movement was one where artist applied paint to the canvas quickly with no set pattern or form . Some splashed paint on the canvas . Colors were chosen instruments for application , and the force of application were all to symbolize the emotion the artist wanted to convey to the viewer . Hans Hoffman 's Rising Sun is an example of abstract expressionism . Different colors are splotched onto the canvas with an elementary orange sun rising in the corner . The different colors are to allow the viewer to feel whatever emotion he /she feels about the subject of the beginning of a new day
