itself is easy to develop if the person has full control of his mental and physical abilities - meaning a normally functioning individual . After much practice , driving becomes instinctive - something individuals do even without actually thinking about it . As a matter of fact , this is why some people are inclined to believe that they can drive while doing something else at the same time
Negotiating a motor vehicle through the streets of a city , however , is a different matter altogether - it demands more than such a skill . Since city streets are inhabited by other motor vehicles and pedestrians alike , driving through them demands vigilance in addition to a well-honed driving skill . Vigilance is paramount because in traffic , the driver is not only concerned with the operation of the vehicle but should also be able to avoid colliding with vehicles coming from the opposite direction , bumping into the vehicle in front , or being knocked from behind by the one following . In addition , the driver should also be on the lookout for wayward pedestrians who suddenly cross the street in unauthorized places
In other words , when operating a motor vehicle in city streets especially busy thoroughfares , the driver has to be a hundred percent alert at all times . He should concentrate on observing other drivers anticipating their intentions as well as judging their speeds to avoid accidents . He should therefore be in full control of his senses and his motor ability because driving in a busy highway is a very demanding task . This means that he or she could not afford distractions of any sort . Many an accident had been caused by a driver who was bothered by a domestic problem at the time - meaning that a troubled person is not fit to drive because he or she is not one hundred percent alert . On the other hand , a story has been told of a man who was lost in his favorite music while driving when all of a sudden a cat crossed his path . The suddenness of it took him completely by surprise , forcing him to swerve in to avoid hitting the cat but crashed into a tree instead . This only goes to show that a driver who is enjoying a favorite music is not a hundred percent alert as well .
