The development of human rights that set apart the XX and XXI centuries would have seemed no less extreme to our ancestors than the elimination of animal exploitation seems now . It is our duty to search for ethical direction not in something that is usual or well-known but in the progressive philosophy of fairness and sympathy that have formed present standards . The statement that animals can not have rights for the reason that up till now humans have not given them

There are a lot of dissimilarities between human beings and animals However , at a basic level , we are connected . We have learnt that now it is impossible to presume that animals are plain machines , or that they are all about instincts and reflex . We know for sure that they might thrive when free or suffer under repression the way humans do . To search for refuge in unawareness is not an option for us anymore (Regan , 2000

Though animals do not have the ability to express their interests , or clearly declare their rights , it is undoubted that they have natural interests . Every animal looks for protection in to stay alive and safe , it 's essential for them to stay free (Rollin , 2006 . They are very similar to people , no matter how many differences there are between their way of life and ours . So , given that animals feel pain , defend themselves , require being free and have all natural instincts like humans do , what gives us the right to pursue the policy of denying their rights

The main argument used by the opponents of Animal Rights movement is assumption that animals , unlike human beings , do not have the ability of free moral judgment . They are not beings of a type able to applying or acting in response to moral claims and for that reason animals do not have rights , and can not have any . People who are against animal rights tend to believe that animals are deprived of rights for they do not have our intellect , emotional connection and sense of morals (Rollin , 2006 Though not many would disagree with the fact that nearly all human beings have these abilities to a considerably greater level than animals , this is not a reason to deny animals protection from exploitation . There are a lot of people who also do not have these qualities , for example , infants or those who suffer from mental illness /injury

We accept that these people are worthy of protection , and not the fortification of their rights instead of denying them . We are responsible for human beings who are incapable of defending their rights successfully . To operate with contradictory standards to human beings and animals is to be responsible for inexcusable discrimination Non-human beings are able to feel suffering in the same way and to the same extent that people do . They experience all the emotions people usually do not tend to associate with animals , such as pain contentment...
