Madame Loisel lives as a middle class woman , with a husband earning enough to provide them with the necessities of life and a little comfort . Though they are living a comfortable life , Loisel was not satisfied with the simple life they are living . She believed that she was supposed to be born of every delicacy and luxury (Maupassant 1992 . Her pride and vanity was so ingrained in her mind that she felt tormented by her dreams of wealth . She wanted so much to belong to the upper class , the wealthy people , that she

disregarded appreciation of their comfortable life . When her husband brought home an invitation instead of being happy that she will be able to attend such a private and glorious event , she became even more depressed at her situation . She wanted so much to be able to keep up with the wealthy class , that she demanded her husband to provide her a dress and jewels to match it . When she lost the jewel that she borrowed from her friend to keep an appearance of wealth , she caused great distress and suffering for both her and her husband . But despite their suffering , she still goes back in time to relish the memory of being able to have a night of false wealth
