The psychoanalytic theory says that a person 's personality is formed in
the first five years of life . Freud argues that the experiences and
conditions at which a child grows up dictates the frustrations , the
desires and passions that rules the person (Boyd Bee , 2006 . The
psychosexual stages of development are focused on the early development
of the child and correspond roughly to specific ages , the first stage is
the oral stage (birth to 2 year , followed by the anal stage (2 to 3
years ) and at Michael 's age he is in the phallic stage (4 to 5 years .
The phallic stage is characterized by the awareness of the child 's sex
and of the behaviors associated with that sex . Michael is exhibiting
behaviors associated with the anxiety and conflict of realizing what a
man or woman should do , what is considered to be masculine or feminine
and the onset and hopefully the resolution of the Oedipus complex .
Michael 's difficult behavior is possibly caused by his desire to be with
his mother as a function of the Oedipus complex (Crain , 2005 , wherein
Michael desires to be with his mother and is feeling animosity to his
father , hence his noncompliance with his father 's ministrations .
In order to resolve this issue , the child must learn to identify with
the same sex parent , so Michael must be given more time to spend with
his father , and to give more attention to his relationship with Michael .
They should spend more time and engage in male specific activities
together . His mother should be more patient and to make Michael feel
loved and appreciated and that he does not need to compete with his
father for his mother 's attention .
The psychoanalytic theory of Freud is actually a good theory to use to
explain the behavior of the developing child . However , at present Freud
is not popular and many would not think of the Oedipus complex as a
valid explanation of the changes in the behavior of the developing
child . Personally , the psychoanalytic theory without the sexual
overtones would have been an effective perspective in the study of
personality and child development .
