Indeed , being a member of the group , a person has to distinguish between the leader and the authority , as they often have different functions in the organization . A leader is a person who can influence others to be more effective , say Johnson and Johnson (2009 ,
.168 , and authority is legitimate power assigned to a particular position (Johnson Johnson , 2009 ,
.187 . Therefore , these definitions bring about another important distinction - the distinction between influence and power
Yet , all these concepts as well as different leadership theories are nothing without application to practice . In reality , one often exerts and experiences influence and power simultaneously . For example , working as an operations manager I should lead my organization to greater efficiency within my sphere of responsibilities , for which I have to exert influence over others .
