1 . How does the biologist determine whether a thing is living or nonliving

A biologist can distinguish between living things and non-living things through seven-different ways : -

Presence of complex and highly-structured organization in living things

Presence of a chemical composition of living cells that is different from the environment

Ability of living thing to consume substances , transform it to energy and use it for various purposes

Response to stimuli (present in the environment

) from living organisms

Ability to multiply and reproduce

Ability to grow and develop

Ability to adapt to the environment (Teachers Domain , 2007

2 . State the significance of photosynthesis and cellular respiration to all life . Describe THREE differences that exist between these two chemical processes

Photosynthesis is a process by which several living organisms such as plants , bacteria and certain protistans utilize sunlight and several raw materials in to produce sugars and also release oxygen into the atmosphere . These organisms contain a green pigment known as `chlorophyll ' that helps to utilize the sunlight in a chemical reaction The raw materials include carbon dioxide and water . Photosynthesis helps to lower the carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere and increase the levels of oxygen required for human life . Besides , it also helps to meet the energy requirements of the plants (Farabee , 2007

Cellular respiration is a process by which several complex substances such as glucose are broken by the enzymes present in the body to produce energy in the form of ATP . In this process , oxygen is utilized and carbon dioxide is produced . It can take place in animal and plant cells to meet with the energy requirements . Chlorophyll and sunlight is not required for the process . Water is also produced as a bye-product during cellular respiration (CCC , 2007

3 . Distinguish between red blood cells , white blood cells and platelets What are the functions of each

Blood cells are of three types , namely , Red blood cells , white blood cells and platelets . Each of these cells has a different structure and function . Red blood cells or `erythrocytes ' appear biconcave shape and carry hemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying pigment . These cells have a life span of about 120 days . They help to carry oxygen to various parts of the body and remove carbon dioxide . The red blood cells give the characteristic red color to the blood . White blood cells or `leucocytes ' are cells that protect the body from foreign bodies and microorganisms . They are present in the blood and in case of any threat they would migrate to that area and help destroy the threat White blood cells are of different types and of various sizes . The white blood cells produce antibodies , which help to recognize a threat and neutralize it . Other types of white blood cells help to capture and destroy the foreign bodies through a process known as `phagocytosis Platelets are fragment of larger cells that help to plug a clot and hence...
