Broadly speaking anesthesia is of three types , local , regional and general . Local anesthesia uses the nerve blocking action of drugs that are injected to produce anesthesia of a local region . It may be used for local infiltration of a region for surgery as in fingertips , or for regional nerve blocks as in wrist blocks for hand surgery . The advantage of these are that the patient is fully conscious , but feels the touch of instruments , which can be discomforting . Therefore it should be done for minor procedures , which can be completed in a short duration of time

In more recent times , general anesthetics may include the following in its most general form : hypnosis , obtundation of reflexes , analgesia relaxation , and amnesia . The use of hypnosis essentially results to unconsciousness without the use of an analgesic . Analgesia primarily refers to the actual blocking the conscious sensation of pain felt by an individual . While amnesia refers to the prevention of the formation of memory in the brain , relaxation refers to the prevention of any unwanted muscle tone or movement .
