Ancient Rome

Roman wall paintings were a truly unique in the sense that they embodied four very distinct art styles based upon the localities in which the wall paintings were created . The styles of Roman wall paintings include incrustation , architectural style , ornate style and intricate style . Incrustation was modeled after the Greek styles of art architectural style combined the entirety of a room and even created the perception of extending beyond it orate style follows the traditional concept of a framed painting although in this particular style the frame was sometimes

painted one and the intricate style is based on overhead views and vistas

Roman wall paintings were essentially murals painted on plaster . Often these painting were devised to create a unique look within the interior of a room or house . This was a radical departure from many other art forms that existed during the same time period . Often they were crafted on a material known as fresco as this material was conducive to hanging on interior walls . While that may not sound like much of an auspicious form of art when one closely examines the art it becomes obvious that a great deal of skill and precision had going into their creation . In addition to being crafted with many various paints , stucco and even stones were used to create these unique wall paintings . The subject matter of these wall paintings was often the glory of Rome itself . That is to say , the images on the wall paintings included landscapes reproductions of the urban areas , people and even animals indigenous of the locale . In a way , the purpose of Roman wall paintings was to bring the glory that was Rome into the interiors were people lived

There are a multitude of these artworks on display in Italy today and in the United States these paintings have been displayed in New York City 's Metropolitan Museum of Art
