Roman wall paintings were essentially murals painted on plaster . Often these painting were devised to create a unique look within the interior of a room or house . This was a radical departure from many other art forms that existed during the same time period . Often they were crafted on a material known as fresco as this material was conducive to hanging on interior walls . While that may not sound like much of an auspicious form of art when one closely examines the art it becomes obvious that a great deal of skill and precision had going into their creation . In addition to being crafted with many various paints , stucco and even stones were used to create these unique wall paintings . The subject matter of these wall paintings was often the glory of Rome itself . That is to say , the images on the wall paintings included landscapes reproductions of the urban areas , people and even animals indigenous of the locale . In a way , the purpose of Roman wall paintings was to bring the glory that was Rome into the interiors were people lived
There are a multitude of these artworks on display in Italy today and in the United States these paintings have been displayed in New York City 's Metropolitan Museum of Art
