The Classical Period in Ancient Greece According to Pollitt , the Classical Moment in Ancient Greece occurred in the years between 450 and 430 B .C . Athenians began to move away from their deep beliefs in myth and legend , instead beginning to focus on the study of the human existence , the hierarchy of human society . It was during this period that the Parthenon was reconstructed , prior to the Peloponnesian War . The temple reflects the return to science of the time as it was constructed as an optical illusion . Athenians began to celebrate the triumph of civilization over barbarism a fact which is reflected in their belief in the group . The Athenians of this period believed strongly in their own power as human beings , so less emphasis was placed on their traditional gods and goddesses . The Periclean style began to permeate the lives of the Greeks in 452 B .C continuing until the plague which struck Athens in 429 B .C . This was an attitude adopted dedicated to the glorification of Athens and her people . Pericles began the struggle to forcefully unite the Greek empire . Another very popular belief of the time was the Protagorian belief that knowledge is subjective , dependent senses of the individual .
