Running head : ANCIENT ART Ancient Chinese Art [Name of student] [Institutional information] ANCIENT CHINESE ART One of the rare findings that date back to 3000 BC China is a ceramic basin called pen . It is a shallow earthenware vessel that is associated with the Majiayao culture . The pottery was found in the Gansu Province close to where the Neolithic cultures once thrived along the banks of the Yellow River . The interior of the basin features intricate designs composed of black lines of varying thickness . Several lines are grouped together

as if flowing in a single pattern and direction before merging to a circular pattern . These lines continue along the edges of the mouth of the basin which , when viewed from the top , looks as though the pattern extends below the basin . However , the linear design does not continue on the outer side of the basin . A few lines can be found along the middle section of the outer side of the basin which runs through the entire circle of the vessel . These hand ' motifs on the external side of the pen are painted in a fluid brush line which makes them look more natural . The unpainted areas in both the internal and external sides of the basin create images of circular figures that create the spaces between the lines
