The Dases , an Indian-American couple visit their parents in India with their three children . They hire a taxi to the Sum Temple at Konark and Mr . Kapasi is their driver and their travel guide . During the course of the journey the reader learns about Mrs . Das ' boredom with life and her family and her husband 's lack of awareness of the same .
