Analytically compare and contrast the short stories of "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson and "The Rocking-Horse Winner" by D.H. Lawrence.
Cinderella story or something to that sort , which would take readers back to their childhood years Jackson , on the other hand , also used a light tone in the beginning and almost all throughout the story which made the ending unpredictable . She led the readers to create a picture on their minds about a usual tradition or recreation that happens in ordinary rural places never hinting about what the practice was all about The use of irony was also seen in both stories . The most obvious irony in Jackson 's piece was the

lottery itself because as earlier said instead of getting rewarded , one is killed upon winning . Also , it was ironic how it was supposed to be an event that the family would enjoy for they appeared to be a tightly knit group , however , in the end the winner will be stoned by everyone with passion including their own family members . This only went to show that the people valued their tradition more than their own flesh and blood . In Lawrence ' story situational irony can be seem at the end of the story wherein Paul tried so hard for the have a clear vision of who will win the race and was able to do so , however , it claimed his life in return . Thus , his winning a fortune also brought him his misfortune . It was also ironic how his uncle and their gardener claim to believe in his visions but never fully gambled even though he was very sure of who will win the race . They always claim to have full trust in him and always take his words but always with grains of salt
The authors also used symbols in their stories . The black box in The Lottery ' symbolized their old tradition , worn out and is almost falling apart...
