A Rose for Emily and The Yellow Wall

A Comparison of the Feminist and Psychological Undertones in Both Literary Pieces

There are indeed many stories featured in Richard Abcarian and Marvin Klotz 's Literature : The Human Experience . The selections were all very interesting , but perhaps nothing will compare to the curiosity piqued by William Faulkner 's A Rose for Emily and Charlotte Perkins Gilman 's The Yellow Wall . Faulkner 's and Gilman 's stories are dark , intriguing and at times demented - but the gems of wisdom behind all the mysteries qualify

them as good discussion points

A Rose for Emily is said to be William Faulkner 's most famous , most popular , and most anthologized short story (Wiley Publishing Inc 2007 ) - and why not ? It offers a story that 's both repulsing and engaging . The story revolves around Emily Grierson , a mysterious character revered by the people in her town because of the way she was kept under wraps by her father causing her to grow up unmarried at the age of 30 . The story shows us the peculiar nature of Emily 's character when her father died , she denied his death and refused to have her father taken away . Also a proof of her idiosyncrasy is her preference to stay inside her house for longer periods of time , making her a conundrum to neighbors who only see a silhouette of her in the upper window once in awhile . Having been pitied for the way she remains single at middle age , Emily 's relationship with the foreman Homer Barron made the people of her town very happy for her indeed . But alas , shortly after speculations of Emily and Homer 's marriage - spurned by Emily 's purchase of a man 's toilet and men 's clothing - nobody ever saw Homer again . And since then , visions of her standing by the upstairs window came in lesser frequency . This cloud of mystery is what made the whole town rush to Emily 's house when she died . Her death eventually leads to the discovery of a secret that she has kept in the longest time - the presence of Homer 's remains in the upstairs bedroom , fashioned as if in an embrace . And beside what used to be Homer 's body was a single strand of iron-gray hair , something that describes Emily 's crowning glory until the time of her death

Charlotte Perkins Gilman 's The Yellow Wall , on the other hand , is fashioned after the author 's forte : centering on the unequal rights given to women in the contest of marriage . The story tackles the story of a narrator Jane . Being clinically depressed , Jane 's husband - who is also her physician - advises her to put less stress on her imagination and to steer clear of any physical and intellectual activities . Jane was then placed in what she described as an ancestral hall , where she had to stay in a room with yellow wall that she initially detests As time passes and she is able...
