The revolution was surging in the minds o the people from the beginning through the revolutionary started in 1775 . The colonists found every cause as pretext for quarrel with the British because they have reached a stage when British control was viewed as hindrance rather than help Attitude of the British was harsh . The second Continental Congress made it clear that there was not point of return and the war between the colonists and the British was inevitable . Prof . Oscar Handlin makes the assessment of war in this way In 1775 thirteen colonies have that had become a nation even before they were independent , embarked upon a long war , the outcome which established them firmly as a sovereign power (237 )The war started slowly like any conventional war in the eighteenth century as military preparations of armies necessitated longer periods . At the advent of the war , there were shorter battles here and there as the whole continent was a battlefield . The first phase of the war was of importance because it decided the future course of action . Prof . Binning says in this regard that

The political effect of this (first ) phase of the Revolution was important , as it gave the Patriots increased confidence in the conduct of the war by Congress . Two other phases followed the first phase of the war . In the second phase which lasted till 1777 , the British failed in their strategy British strategy was to cut-off New England colonies and capture Philadelphia , the seat of Continental Congress . But excellent planning in face of difficulties and fall of Saratoga to colonists ended the British hegemony . During the third phase , the war was fought with the help of French and resulted in decisive victory for colonists . American troops under the leadership of Washington and French troops under Lafayette advanced and captured the remaining territories . The surrender of Cornwallis after seeing no hope of survival on October 19 , 1781 was the final episode of this revolutionary war
