The most common events that put the United States in the headlines were the Great Depression , Second World War , Cold War , and the 9 /11 attacks . p Former President William Howard Taft and Secretary of State Philander C . Knox formed a foreign policy known as Dollar Diplomacy . Its main goal was to build stability and overseas and at the same time promote American commercial interests . Other aims of this policy were improving financial opportunities and utilizing private capital to expand the interests of the United States overseas . This policy was seen in the Caribbean and Central America where the United States focused on protecting financial interests in those regions .
