Throughout the course of the history of the United States , there have been a number of inroads made into the progression of equality . Yes there are those critics who point out that there was much inequality in the United States and this is true . But , it is also true to note that many great steps forward in establishing greater equality for all . In many instances during the latter half of the 19th century and the early 20th century , peaceful movements established equality among genders and races . In

some instances , equality was established under move difficult and violent circumstances . However , many great inroads were successfully established

Probably the greatest leap forward towards equality was seen during the Reconstruction period in the post Civil War era . Yes , it was true that much of what was planned for African-Americans did not pan out But , the movement towards equality under the eyes of the law was set in motion . For any movement a start is important and the freeing of slaves and the establishment of the integration of African-Americans in society provided the initial steps needed to create the current , modern free climate

Similarly , one could look at the women 's suffrage movement of late 1800 's and early 20th century . While it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to vote , the advent of this right created the impetus for the women 's equality movement of the latter half of the 20th century . Again , every great event has a starting point and progresses forward . This is the true concept of hope

Of course , there will be those who will argue that equality is elusive at best and , at worst , impossible to achieve . While there are certainly bumps in the road to achieving equality complete avoidance of equality was not the end result . If one were to look at the major progress points of the late 19th century and early 20th century it becomes obvious these bumps where either overcome of the stage was set for eventually overcoming them in the future

The suffrage movement , of course , was not one that started in 1919 and ended in 1920 . Obviously , such a movement takes quite a while to gain momentum . As with any change in a political or ideological climate there needs to be significant time invested into the gaining momentum with the movement . First , it must start with grassroots organization and then it must seek to spread the movement to a larger audience . Once it gains momentum and support it will be on the path to success . Yes , there will be instances were impediments and oppositions would be placed in front of those looking to establish a change . This would be constant in all nations throughout all points in history . However , only in a free environment can it exist . Additionally , there would have to be a fundamental belief in equality .
