It has been there since but not as aggressive as it is today Overbooking is not a crime and it is legally allowed . At any given flight , there are one or several people who had booked and paid for a flight but will end up cancelling the flight for various reasons . The airline can therefore easily operate at a loss if the no-shows

are not replaced in time before the scheduled departure time . To avoid such incidences , overbooking of the airline tickets is made and when the plane is full to take no more , some passengers are requested to sacrifice their flight and reservations are made for them to travel at a later flight . They are in addition compensated for the inconvenience if they are kept in waiting for more than one hour
There is another group of air travelers who mind so much about the costs of their tickets . This lot will not mind about their delays so long as their costs are cut to an amount which they feel comfortable with . Others still will not be in a hurry to arrive to their destinations and it is not an issue when their flights are delayed a little
