Abstract

The nervous system and the endocrine system perform integrated functions required to maintain homeostasis . Abnormalities in the regulation of hormones and transmission of nerve impulses may lead to a number of disorders such as adrenoleukodystrophy . Adrenoleukodystrophy is a disease characterized by the abnormal accumulation of very long

chain fatty acids (VLCFA ) predominantly in the white matter of nervous tissues , the adrenal cortex and the spinal cord . These fatty deposits lead to demyelination of nerve fibers and damage to the adrenal cortex leading to progressive and fatal disability and death . Although there is no known cure for this disorder , there are three basic approaches to treatment that are currently under investigation - diet modification immunosuppression , and bone marrow transplantation . Among the three bone marrow transplantation has shown to be most effective in halting the progression of the disease

The neuroendocrine system is composed of the hypothalamus , pituitary gland , the autonomic nervous system , the central...
