Abstract

Animal-assisted Therapy finds its roots in the confines of the Government Hospital for the Insane now known as St . Elizabeth Hospital in Washington . The two contributors who at that time only wanted playmates for their patients and unintentionally paved way to animal-assisted therapy were Dr . William Alanson White and the Secretary of the Interior Affairs Franklin K . Lane ADDIN EN .CITE Wirth20051 112Cindy WirthAnimal-Assisted Therapy2007March 222005Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Club

Since then , Animal-assisted Therapy has evolved to not just therapy for the prisoners but to rehabilitate animals as well . Grooming seminars for the inmates and training dogs to be aids for the blind or the physically incapacitated individuals were added top the program . The Animal-assisted Therapy has not only benefited the inmates but the disabled citizens as well . Some studies show that the cost of letting the inmates train the dogs is much cheaper than hiring personal trainers therefore saving the state ample amount of money . However , no studies have been conducted in the difference of the cost in training the dogs in or out of prison . And some believe that prison should be a place of punishment so it is unethical to give pets to the inmates so as to reduce their suffering . Given the above benefits of Animal-assisted Therapy , it is recommended that studies be done to promote Animal-assisted Therapy to the public References
