Abortion should be legal(controvorsy)

Legalizing Abortion

There are many reasons why women would opt for an abortion . One of the grounds for choosing to terminate a pregnancy is the fact that continuing it would endanger the life of both the mother and the unborn child . A mother is then left to make a tough choice , should she risk her own life or that of her unborn child or both ? Another reason , the one that we are more commonly familiar with , is the unwanted pregnancy that either stem from teenage unsafe sex , or that which resulted from the

br crime of rape or sometimes , a child conceived out of wedlock . More often than not , an unwanted pregnancy carries with it a social stigma that women bearing an unwanted baby would prefer to have an abortion rather than raise a child in an unhealthy and condemning environment

Even before the landmark decision of the Supreme Court in Poe vs . Wade the debate on whether or not abortion should be legalized already exists . Those who are on the side of legalizing abortion are espousing the woman 's rights to decide for her own self . Such right is ensconced in a person 's freedom to choose or a person 's right to liberty . On the other hand , those who are against abortion would argue that the unborn child has a right to life and no one , not even its mother , is entitled to deprive the unborn child of his or her right to be born into the world . Moreover , abortion amounts to the taking of another person 's life , and is therefore , immoral

And the debate ensues . The differences have not been settled Nevertheless , the dispute on whether or not a woman has a right to choose and whether or not a fetus has the inalienable right to live are not the only issues that should be given notice or priority . Far from that , there is a more pressing problem that comes with abortion . The practice of illegal abortion has become so problematic , that the need to address it is far more important than to answer the question of rights of the mother and that of the unborn child

The World Health Organization reported that every day , approximately 186 women die around the world due to complications from unsafe abortion many of these deaths are in countries where access to abortion is legally restricted (qtd in Schlangen 1 . What does it mean to say unsafe abortion ? The World Health Organization defines unsafe abortion as carried out either by persons lacking the necessary skills or in an environment that does not conform to minimal medical standards , or both (qtd in Schlangen 1

The WHO estimates that about 25 of all pregnancies worldwide end in an induced abortion , approximately 50 million each year . Of these abortions , 20 million are being performed under dangerous conditions either by untrained providers or using unsafe procedures , or both . Death as a result of unsafe abortions in developing countries are estimated at 80 , 000 annually , i...
