In the following essay I will be analyzing four Religious pieces of work currently on view in the Metropolitan Museum of Art from four separate art historic periods . The four works of art included are Madonna and Child by Simone Martini from the International Era , The Crucifixion by Guido Di Pietro also known as Fra Angelico from the Early Renaissance Venus and Cupid by Lorenzo Lotto from the High Renaissance and The Denial of St . Peters by Caravaggio from the Baroque Era

. As you go through each art historic period beginning with the International Era you can see the drastic changes in each painting that help indicate in which time period it is placed . Along with describing each individual picture I will also explain how the use of color began to change throughout these specific paintings and how a movement toward naturalism came about

Each painting mentioned came about from different timeline and each depicts the characteristics of painting of the period it represents while each painting portrays what the painter believed as reality . In this context , color plays significant role not only in aesthetic aspects but in the reality of concepts or values in the paintings . As David Summer put it , . the development of naturalism in the late Middle Ages was part of a vast , uneven , but relentless transformation in attitude towards the world , which became visible in terms of the meaning of naturalism
