Women

Doctor Matina Horner 's study is about how women view themselves regarding men and how these females ' perceptions affect their motivation for success . Dr . Horner shows that girls who think that success is a detriment to their femininity play down their actions toward success She calls this the `motive to avoid success ' and defines it as the fear that success in competitive achievement situations will lead to negative consequences , such as unpopularity and loss of femininity (Horner ,

) Competing with the opposite sex aggravates the anxiety that these kinds of women feel and therefore makes them achieve less

Stephanie Gutmann 's Sex and the Soldier shows how U .S . female soldiers are faring in the military . It said that women had problems adapting themselves to the military primarily because of anatomical differences with the male counterparts . Although women are viewed as stabilizers to the warrior culture ' that pervaded in men , this idea is taking its toll on the ladies because there are a lot of rape incidences that are still happening in the camps . Furthermore , women simply cannot cope with the physical strength needed in the training programs for combat . In experiments , the women tended to have a high injury rate from trying to keep up , and the men complained that they weren 't challenged (Gutmann br

. 391 ) Not only were they weaker physically but also tended to get pregnant . Military life is not adapting quickly enough to women . It should instead understand the differences of both sexes and strive to respect what women do best instead of making them follow men 's footsteps

I believe Dr . Horton 's idea that society has molded women 's thoughts to think that success in the field where men thrive lessens a woman 's appeal and I applaud women who succeed in overcoming this issue . Women have to be taught that although they are not equal to men physically there are so many things outside of domestic life that they can do much better than men can . As in Gutmann 's article , women do excel in the non-physical parts of military life such as map-making and first aid

The woman 's liberation from the society that thinks she is just second class to man does not always have to mean that she has to be level with him in all aspects . True respect for women should take into consideration her strength as a woman and should not be based on what a man has . To be fair to a woman , she has many qualities that a man does not have and these are her strengths . These should be the basis for finding equality (Student 's Last Name ) PAGE 2...
