Abstract

Numerous technological innovations exist to assist learning . Learning theories provide the basic guidelines for developing these technologies Education today , faces numerous challenges that may be overcome with technology . Recently , instructional methods and strategies have been utilized as a way of delivering content and teaching students effectively . These technological methods are utilized optimally when combined with active learning and exploratory learning activities . Any method that involves the active involvement and engagement of

students is bound to provide a more personal and memorable learning experience thereby increasing learning potential , curing learning disabilities and encouraging positive attitudes towards learning

Introduction

Learning goals for schools have undergone major changes during the past century . People now expect a lot more from schools . One primary principle of learning theories is that different learning goals require varying approaches to delivery of instruction (Bransford , Brown Cocking , 1999 . Various teaching and learning strategies are incorporated by teachers at American Intercontinental University (AIU .AIU applies the principles of learning theories to the delivery of content to students through the use of effective and up-to-date instructional technologies which are learner centered , help to increase assimilation , transfer of knowledge and easy accessibility of information by students

Constructivism

Constructivism is based on the belief that learners are not empty vessels to be filled with knowledge but should be actively involved in the pursuit of their own knowledge and meanings . Constructivist main beliefs accept that real-life learning is complex (Siemens , 2005 . In the constructivist approach , the teacher acts as a guide while learners construct their own understanding of concepts by analyzing interpreting , solving problems and predicting information . The independence created in learners while learning helps students to develop knowledge within the framework of knowledge gained over time and individual learning styles . Teaches usually use open-ended questions to promote dialogue and discussions amongst students , allowing them to take responsibility for their own education and preserve their ideas . Constructivism approaches promote active learning , exploratory learning and critical thinking in the classroom . The constructivist mode of teaching is largely employed in the AIU through the use of internet for conducting research experiments , conduction of surveys , reflective thinking and mind maps

Cognitivism

Cognitivism , another learning theory , usually takes on the form of a computer information processing model . Learning is seen as a combination of sequential inputs managed in short-term memory and kept for long-term recall (Siemens , 2005 . Learning is perceived to be a sequential and ly process with steps that must be followed to ensure successful assimilation of knowledge

Cognitivism proposes that students learn by relating new knowledge to previous knowledge . Various cognitive strategies employed at the AIU include rehearsals of previous s learnt , relation of new information to old information through the use of analogies , grouping and outlines and consistent monitoring of learning progress . Since AIU is an online university , with little or no physical contact between students and teachers , a lot of interaction takes place...
