One of the fundamental liberties that is enshrined in the Constitution of almost every government in the world is the right to privacy . People are given the right to be safe in their houses and persons against warrantless searches and seizures . This is an almost absolute right that can only be waived or broken under the strictest of all measures It is a right that is held in high regard as even the government needs to secure warrants that are based on reliable information in to breach this right . The fear , therefore , that

the government is circumventing these stringent procedures in to infringe upon a person 's right to privacy is indeed more real than imagined
1984 is one of those novels that explores this theme by creating a world where Big Brother ' watches . It presents the idea that in the future no citizen can have complete privacy . The influence and reach of the government will become so pervasive that no place will be unreachable . Nothing can be said and nothing can be done without the government knowing . While this may not amount to control in the strictest sense of the word , it can be argued that control amounts to knowledge of what events transpire . If there was no Bill of Rights or even the System of Checks and Balances that was implemented to ensure that no single branch of the government exercised complete control over the activities of the populace then what one could reasonably expect would be a world similar to that of 1984
In today 's world , the danger that the government is monitoring the populace in complete disregard of the constitution is indeed real . As the recent news events on wiretapping and the recent developments in espionage technology abound , it comes now to the attention of the people that the government could probably be doing the very thing that those safeguards set out to prevent the invasion of privacy . It is possible however , to argue that it is not yet happening at this point in time but there is no guarantee that it cannot be done in the future
