The 1964 United States election marked another year of rigorous and tedious campaigns for presidency amongst the Republicans and the Democratics . Candidates for presidency were John Kasper , Joseph B Lightburn , Barry Morris Goldwater and Lyndon Baines Johnson , for the States ' Rights , Constitution , Republican and Democratic parties respectively . Amongst these candidates , the heat of the election campaign was between Barry Morris Goldwater and Lyndon Baines Johnson (Herrnson et al , 2005

Lyndon Baines Johnson is a candidate known to be larger-than-life . The Democratic presidential candidate was born in Stonewall , Texas in the year 1908 . Particularly , he was raised or nurtured in Johnson City , a tiny hamlet fifty-miles west of Austin and located in the state 's south central Hill Country . For some well-known individuals , like Sam Rayburn Lyndon Baines Johnson is a mountebank politician . Liberals on the other hand view Lyndon Johnson as a reactionary who partly built a budget surplus by slashing state services (Dallek , 2004

His family background does stand beyond average candidates , being a member of prominent families in Texas , specifically the Johnsons and the Baineses . These families are considered to be standing at the state 's religious , educational , and most importantly , at the political institutions . On the other hand , Barry Morris Goldwater was born in the year 1909 from a merchant family in Arizona . Barry Goldwater attended Staunton Military Academy and later on , the University of Arizona for one year . After his studies , he returned to help in their family business and enlisted for the United States Army Air Corps when the Second World War broke . He was able to serve in the Pacific and in India and was promoted as Brigadier General in the Air Force Reserve after decades of service

Generally , Arizona was responsible for the political background for Barry Goldwater . He grew up as a staunch individualist who was distrustful of the government . For the touchstone of his political beliefs , he considered and embraced the doctrine of limited government This political belief , and philosophy , was able to carry Barry Goldwater first to the Phoenix City Council and then to the United States Senate in the year 1952 (Schweizer and Hall , 2007
